California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) – Train Your Employees on the Californian Data Privacy Law.

As The Economist magazine once famously noted: “The world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data.” It’s a statement that’s never been truer than it is today.

User behavior and personal information are being tracked, mined, processed and sold to third parties all across the internet. And, whether they’re aware of it or not, users themselves are increasingly becoming a product to be bought and sold.

In the early days of the internet, this wasn’t so much of a problem. Sites provided compelling free content in order to attract users who they could then monetize via direct advertising or product sales on site. Life was relatively simple.

As the sophistication of tracking technologies increased, however, more and more questions began to emerge about what type of data was being stored, how it was being used, and who had access to it. Users were often completely unaware of how their data was being used behind the scenes, leading to serious concerns about online privacy and security.

Europe was the first region to tackle this problem with the introduction of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) legislation in 2018. Inspired by this example, the State of California decided to significantly tighten its own data privacy regulations in order to give users and consumers transparency and control over how their personal data is tracked, stored, and used.

The result was the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) of 2018 which grants California consumers “robust data privacy rights and control over their personal information, including the right to know, the right to delete, and the right to opt-out of the sale of personal information that businesses collect”.

CCPA introduces significant new obligations that companies and employees need to be aware of to ensure CCPA compliance. We’ve put together a simple, affordable online CCPA training course to properly prepare your employees and ensure they’re aware of CCPA requirements.
